SIMBY Presents: The Voices of Sisterly Affection  (Tierra Whack)

ADDIE Model

Analysis

  • Needs Analysis

The Black Music City Project was developed to honor Philly’s Black music history:

“Having nurtured numerous groundbreaking musical styles and artists, and been at the forefront of some of the world’s most significant musical developments, Philadelphia’s rich Black music history will be the source of inspiration and interpretation by today’s Black creatives. Black Music City is a program that calls upon Black creatives in the greater Philadelphia area (PA, NJ, DE) working in any creative medium to submit their project ideas honoring Philly’s Black music history and apply for a project grant.”

- REC Philly

There is unfamiliarity with Philly’s history of nurturing groundbreaking Black musical talent and a lack of celebration around this history, especially for Black womxn artists.

  • Learner Analysis

For this project, the learners are english-speaking art enthusiasts and artists, exhibit goers who are interested in learning about Philly’s Black music herstory, non-Philadelphians who are interested in learning about Philly’s Black music herstory, and consumers of the content via REC Philly, Stories In My Backyard (SIMBY), and Kyra Williams’ personal network. In terms of prior knowledge, learners are aware of some of these artists' names, musical works, and appearances but not all of them. They are also aware that these artists are all from Philly based on the theme of the Black Music City project if not already from their personal knowledge of these acts.

  • Task Analysis

As a photographer and videographer, with this digital project I am honoring Philly’s Black music herstory and introducing learners to the signature contributions of these Black womxn artists for Black Music Month, which is when this project will be on display.

Learning Theories

  • “Constructivism...insists that knowledge is not something in the world to be ‘acquired’ but a state of understanding to be discovered afresh by the learner through their own exploratory (and constructing) actions” (Crook & Sutherland 15). Learning is “doing something to alter the state of your mind to achieve a gain in personal knowledge or competence” (Crook & Sutherland 23). Thus, learners bring their prior knowledge into a learning environment, which impacts the learning that can happen.

  • This digital art project plays off of the learner’s comfort with photo and video in this current age of media via music videos, interviews, social media, and editorial images. This allows them to explore and discover knowledge in a self-guided manner as they interact with the artifacts.

Tierra Whack

Documentation

For this Tierra Whack look that we recreated with a 13 year old model from North Philly named Taylor Jones, we referenced an editorial shoot she did in an LA diner with photographer, Maria Jose Govea (Cineas, Mims). A sneak peek at the images I photographed are below. Due to COVID, we couldn’t use a diner to recreate these images so we booked an indoor studio called REC Philly and used a seamless backdrop, a table and chair, subtle color gel lighting, and a strobe flash to get our shots. I used my Canon 5D Mark IV to capture these photos with a Tamron 17-35mm lens and an 85mm Canon lens and edited them in Adobe Lightroom. In terms of post production for this video, I created the instrumental track in Spotify’s Soundtrap. I filmed the footage using my Canon M50 and a 50mm lens as well as a Canon XF200 as the BTS camera. Also, I edited in Adobe Premiere using the Swiftly Studios transition pack.

I’ve created videos in this documentary style before using interview audio clips and online footage, so I thought this grant project would be a great time to revisit this concept with my own video while storyboarding before editing for the first time. This video only currently includes footage of the model portraying Tierra Whack, so as I continue with this project I will conduct more shoots, storyboard, research, and edit in footage/audio for eight other artists that I’m paying homage to for The Black Music City Project. Also, I will create a music playlist to share via social media and the SIMBY website.
